Something to Watch - Out of the Furnace

Some movies are about escaping to a place better than your own. And some throw you in the depths of southwestern Pennsylvania in the blue collar city of Braddock, Pennsylvania. That’s precisely what Out of the Furnace does. In the declining steel town outside of Pittsburgh, this film follows two brothers played by Christian Bale and Casey Affleck who quite simply just want to get by. Unfortunately for them, no matter how hard they try, it seems like everything is against them.

The cast in this - unbelievable. Bale and Affleck, sure. But Saldana, Whitaker, Dafoe, and above all else, the scummiest performance from Woody Harrelson you’ve ever seen. It is everything. It can be a heavy watch, but if you’re looking for something real and don’t want to feel the weight of the world, just treat it as a Batman origin story.
