Something to Watch - Leaving Las Vegas

Sometimes you read something so good, it feels like you’re watching it. Other times, you read something and think, “wow, what a load of garbage.” But rarely do you see something and go, “I think this is supposed to be garbage, but boy is it magical on screen.” That is precisely the category that Leaving Las Vegas falls in. Nic Cage puts on an Oscar-winning performance in his role as a divorced, alcoholic and out-of-work screenwriter who decides to spend the remainder of his money on alcohol until he drinks himself to death. He stars alongside a breathtaking Elisabeth Shue, a prostitute he befriends, and together they stage one of the most exhausting, magnetic, and frankly bizarre movies that probably encapsulates the phrase, “they don’t make em like they used to,” better than anything else. You’ve seen Cage steal the Declaration of Independence, and you’ve seen him swap faces with John Travolta, but you have NEVER, seen him like this. His ‘why’ is powerful, but his ‘how’ is hilarious. Give it a watch.
